Cheap “Pepsi” Rolex GMT Master II 116719 BLRO Review

Replica Rolex is the only expensive watch company that has not just one but two watches that are nicknamed after soft drink. Of course, we’re talking about the Rolex GMT Master II watches that have the split two color dials. This particular review is focused on one, the 18kt white gold 116719 BLRO with the blue and red bezel known as the “Pepsi” and if you got one of these watches then “You got the right stuff, baby!”

One of the things that differentiate the GMT Master II from the older GMT series is that Rolex implemented the Cerachrom bezel insert. The advantage if this new bezel is that it’s made of a highly scratch-resistant hardened ceramic material and it has UV repelling properties so that colors won’t fade when exposed to ultraviolet rays …even for a long duration.

In the olden days of watchmaking, when bezels were made entirely of metal, there were obvious challenges for Rolex to come up with this new ceramic material and Rolex had to really think outside of the box.

One can truthfully say that Rolex was never accused of was being uncreative with their manufacturing or lacking in the innovation department. They’re been consistently doling out new patents that improved watchmaking from the very beginning of their existence.

Another fine example of such innovation is the Rolex Easylink 5mm extension link found on the bracelet of this watch. This allows you to make a quick 5mm adjustment to the size of the bracelet to compensate when the wrist naturally expands and contracts with fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

Rolex has had two-tone bezels for over fifty years. From the older Rolex Pepsi bezels to the “Coke” bezel (which were red and black) to the very popular black and blue bezel model of the GMT Master II. It’s a tradition that I think will stick. In addition to soft drink names, this watchmaker has a few watches with superhero names in it such as the Hulk with a green bezel (come to think of it, they could have called it the Sprite Rolex or the Mountain Dew…) and of course, Batman with the blue and black bezel.

The Rolex GMT Master II “Pepsi” watch has a GMT complication also known as a dual time zone feature. You notice a red hand below? This is the GMT hand. It is a mechanism that allows you to see the time in two different time zones simultaneously. It is ideal for those globetrotting jet-setters that are always traveling to (or even calling) places in different time zones.

Let’s compare Rolex and TAG Heuer side-by-side and address the most common contexts that this question can be found in.

From a mechanical point of view many would argue that Rolex has the upper hand seeing as they do all their watch and movements in-house and don’t outsource parts like TAG Heuer does on many of their watches nor do they use ébauche movements. These are semi-finished movements/calibers that act as a template of sorts and can be enhanced by watchmakers to accommodate a number of features or complications depending on the watch’s needs and the ébauches that are used to create it.

Rolex also made numerous horological innovations including the type of rotors that are found in automatic watches that we use today. They have also taken great strides in combatting electromagnetic interference which is a big enemy of mechanical watches.

Another interesting point to make is that TAG Heuer offers many non-mechanical watches known as Quartz watches which are battery powered and therefore don’t run on springs the way automatic watches and manual wind watches do. In terms of traditional watchmaking, this puts Rolex a grade above since they are more traditionalist and mechanical watches are considered to be higher-end because of the extra work it takes to create their mechanical movements.

Rolex also has a 3rd party, COSC certifies their movements and gives them the Chronometer designation for its accuracy and precision. Getting COSC certificates are pricey and because Rolex prices are more up-market, they can easily absorb these added expenses into their pricing strategy.

TAG Heuer, on the other end also has very accurate mechanical watches and their president even claimed that they can easily compare with a COSC Chronometer but to pass the savings on to their customers, they don’t test their movements with COSC and avoid the extra expense. It’s also important to note that TAG Heuer also has many quartz models that are battery powered movements which have higher accuracy than mechanical calibers.

One thing that Rolex does that adds value to their watch in terms of precision and accuracy is that after they receive a COSC certificate, they take the movement and place it inside a watch case and give it further testing in-house. A COSC certificate states that the movement is a Chronometer and was tested to have an accuracy of within -4/+6 seconds per day however, after Rolex’s in-house testing the watches have a new designation of Superlative Chronometer (which they also print on the dial of the watch) and this means they have an enhanced accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day.

Let’s look at it from the brand perspective and see how they position against each other in the overall Swiss watch marketplace. There is a brand consultancy called Interbrand that puts out an annual list of the top 50 most popular Swiss brands in the world and a large percentage of these brands are watchmakers. Let’s see how the Swiss watchmakers rank on this list and how they compare to one another in terms of brand value and recognition.

TAG Heuer is the 12th most recognized watch brand from Switzerland and in 2016 had an estimated brand value of 76 Million CHF. This makes them the 34th most popular and valuable Swiss brand in the top 50.

Rolex is the #1 most recognized watch brand in the world. They are also one of the most valuable Swiss brands weighing in at #3 of the top 50 Swiss brands with an estimated brand value of 7.387 Billion CHF.

What does brand value mean? Well, say you bought a bottle of Coca-Cola brand cola and poured its contents into some generic store brand bottle. Would you be able to sell the same product under a different bottle at the same price as Coca-Cola? The brand itself adds tremendous value to a product. I am in no way implying that a TAG Heuer watch is the same as a Rolex watch on the inside, on the contrary, they are very different on the inside. It’s just to provide insight as to why certain things about Rolex are the way they are. For example, things like brand recognition, brand recall, resale value etc.

Neither one is. A watch is not an investment such as a mutual fund or even real estate. There is no point in looking at a luxury watch that way, it’s simply not true. A watch can be compared to a car in terms of investments, the moment you use it even once, it already dropped in value. Furthermore, people think of it as an asset but an asset actually generates money such as capital gains from SEC-registered securities or rental income from a property.

That’s not to say that there have never been certain watches that have appreciated in value for any number of reasons but the majority of the time they don’t. They do however hold a certain percentage of their original value. And this is one of the areas where Rolex is king. There is simply no other brand of watches that holds its value like Rolex.

There are several variables at play that contribute to the resale value such as the condition the watch is in. Does it come in its original box? Does it include any original documents & warranty card? Is it still within the warranty period? Is it a limited edition, a special edition or a numbered edition? Did some hot-shot celebrity wear it in a blockbuster movie such as a James Bond film and all of a sudden make it super famous? You get the idea.

TAG Heuer offers a 2 year warranty period on their watches. This is a pretty standard warranty period compared to most brands in the industry.

Before January 2015, Rolex offered a 2 year warranty period. After Jan 2015 it became a 5-year warranty. Possibly the longest in the industry.

We also get this question a lot. With all the things that are different about each of these brands, it’s usually about gauging the price of a watch against the features that it offers and finding out what about the watch is important to you.

Some want to pass it on as a family heirloom one day and therefore are looking for a watch with the better resale value, in which case a Rolex is probably best since they hold their value better than TAG Heuer.

Some may want a watch with a high complication such as a Tourbillon watch, in which case TAG Heuer just came out with possibly the most affordable high complication tourbillon watch on the market known as the Carrera Heuer 02T which is a stunning watch and affordably priced for the complicated mechanical featured that it offers.

Despite the fact that the trend for watch case sizes is showing that people are buying watches with larger cases these days, the 5 featured watches are all midsize watches at 36mm and can be worn by women or even men with average to smaller wrist sizes.

It’s a shame that the only materials used are white gold and platinum. No rose gold, no yellow gold, and no steel options.

It would have been nice to see a Rolex Datejust in Red on this list or in any other material such as stainless steel or even a solid 18kt yellow gold model with a red dial. I’d even settle for a stainless steel 36mm Day-Date with a red dial just to have a more affordable option for those that don’t want to dish out for gold or platinum models. Perhaps even a Rolex GMT-Master II with a red dial to match one of the models that have a split red and black bezel. If you ever see one in the future you’ll know that you heard of it here first!

The two most expensive models pictured below are not using 18kt white gold but rather platinum. The more expensive of the two platinum models has a diamond bezel (ref. 118346 Cherry Index President) while the more affordable of the two platinum models has a smooth bezel without any diamonds (ref. 118206 Cherry Index President).

What is more accurate, a Zenith or a Rolex? One of the things that these two watch brands are great at is accuracy, yet each in their own special way. Rolex makes a superior mechanical caliber when it comes to overall accuracy and precision. Their movements are even more accurate than the standard COSC chronometer.

This is why you will see the words “Superlative Chronometer” on the dials of modern Rolex watches. This means that the watch has an accuracy which a deviation threshold of +2/-2 seconds per day. The standard COSC certified watch is -4/+6 seconds per day.

Zenith, on the other hand, has an iconic and highly precise chronograph movement (a movement with a stopwatch function). In fact, when it was first released in 1969, after 7 years of development, it was the very first automatic chronograph in history. Their legendary El Primero movement is a high-beat caliber that resonates at 36,600 VpH and can be used to measure time in a highly precise way.

Furthermore, the El Primero movement was the very caliber that powered the Rolex Daytona many moons ago before Rolex started only using in-house calibers in their watches.

This is an area where Zenith shines brighter than the very star that inspired their brand name. In terms of horology many will judge a brand by how complicated their watches can get. Many brands are admired for their added features. In watchmaking this is referred to as “complications”. Some examples of high complications are perpetual calendars, minute repeaters, and of course, tourbillons which are usually considered by most to be “la crème de la crème” in terms of complications since only few manufactures are able to create these mesmerizing complications. Zenith created the first high-beat tourbillon which oscillates at 36,000 VpH or 5Hz which adds an extra level of prestige to their brand.

Rolex doesn’t manufacture any tourbillon watches. Some after-market companies have been adding them to the Milgauss watches lately but Rolex doesn’t make them. Rolex does has some manufactured some pretty complicated movements of their own such as the Rolex in-house caliber 9001 found in the Sky Dweller which holds 14 patents. While this is a very impressive movement, to say the least, the brand has never aligned themselves with haute-horlogerie (high-horology watches) the way Zenith did with the introduction of their 1-minute and 5Hz tourbillons. Rolex, according to most people is a high-end brand that manufactures excellent tool-watches that offer higher-than COSC Chronometer accuracy.

Both of these brands make excellent watches. Rolex watches, specifically their sports models such as the Submariner, GMT Master II are known to be built tough as nails. They are often used as the “beater watch” for many luxury watch collectors that are looking for a wristwatch that can take a little punishment all the while maintaining impressive accuracy.

Replica Zenith watches are slightly more affordable than a Rolex and offer great value with their highly precise chronographs. They don’t hold their value the way a Rolex would and in the defense of Zenith, neither does any other brand for that matter.

Both IWC and Rolex offer great craftsmanship with beautifully finished mechanical movements, however, IWC is more likely to flaunt their work by using transparent case backs. Rolex, on the other hand, only has watches with solid case backs which is kind of a shame since they do makeexcellent mechanical calibers.

It also gives you a subtle hint as to what demographic they are catering to. Some even go as far as to say that people who only wear Rolexes are usually not 100% in it for the horology and mechanical marvels of watchmaking but rather for the public recognition of what they are wearing on their wrist. Then again there are others who completely disagree with that and love the fact that Rolex builds very durable and accurate watches. The same cannot be said about IWC which is a highly recognized brand but at the same time, it is recognized more within the watchmaking and watch collecting community. Some might even call it a more refined brand of watch.

It is also very important to note that Rolex produces all its calibers in-house. IWC, on the other hand, will more-often-than-not use ébauche calibers which are a template of sorts made by a 3rdparty and then adjust them in-house to built them up as they see fit.

IWC also produces in-house calibers but unless they specifically say that it is an in-house movement, you can bet that someone else such as ETA (i.e the famous Valjoux movement) or Sellita made it (for the most part). There isn’t anything wrong with using ébauche calibers. Most watchmakers do…but a certain amount of prestige is attributed to watchmakers that can do everything in-house.

Rolex is by far the winner here. No other watchmaker has as high of an average resale value compared to Rolex. Not even the likes of the “holy trinity” of watchmakers (Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin & Audemars Piguet). Watches are very similar to other mechanical products such as vehicles in the sense that as soon as you use it once, it lost a good chunk of its value.

An entry-level Rolex watch will cost about 150% more than the cheapest IWC watch. On the plus side, you can acquire an iconic IWC watch such as the IWC Pilot’s watch Mark XVIII 40mm Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince) for substantially less than that of the most affordable iconic Rolex watch such as the Submariner which will cost about double the price of the most an affordable iconic IWC watches.

Most watch enthusiasts, watchmakers, and serious collectors would tell you without any hesitation that Rolex is a different type of watch than IWC. It is more utilitarian; a tool watch of sorts. Whereas IWC is a more refined watch that shows impeccable class and good taste. This resulted in Rolex achieving a 100% international brand recall whereas IWC isn’t anywhere near that. Rolex is, in fact, the most valuable watch brand in the world according to Interbrand, a brand valuation agency that rates the most valuable and recognized Swiss brands; many which are watchmakers. Rolex is the #1 most recognized luxury watch brand in the world. IWC is the 9th most recognized Swiss watchmaker in the world (which is also very impressive).

Some even go as far to say that if you want to impress your average layman, wear a Rolex but IWC is a watch to wear to impress a watchmaker or serious collector. The difference is not only seen in the brand positioning and marketing efforts of both brands but also in the public’s perception of each brand. Rolex pushes their brand aggressively and with many impressive ads that promulgate a desirable and often attainable item to the average person. You can see this in the very publications where their ads are placed. Their target demographic is basically everyone and everywhere. Doing this creates this desire in the public eye for something expensive and give one the illusion of success if they manage to purchase one.

I know this may sound like I’m beating on Replica Rolex watch but I’m not. I’m just explaining what happens when a brand with the magnitude of Rolex aggressively advertises their products to anyone and everyone. However, their “Crash Test” uses 20 different drop tests and another called the “belier” which is literally a battering ram which delivers an impactful slam equivalent to 5,000 G. This is 100’s of times the intensity of the crashes used in testing motor vehicles. The watch needs to stay unharmed and 100% operational afterward and still have the highest of accuracy regardless.
